《本草纲目拾遗》记载：黑豆即今之马料豆也，其色黑，而形如人腰，故入肾经；黑豆味甘温无毒，壮筋骨，止盗汗，补肾活血，明目，益精;但食黑豆，则须发不白，其补肾之功可知；服之能益精补髓，壮力润肌，发白复黑，久则转老为少，终其身无痰病也。
李时珍在其所著《本草纲目》中说，豆有多种颜色，只有黑豆既可充当粮食又可做药，所指黑豆就是细长圆小的细腰黑豆。服食黑豆，令人长肌肤，益颜色，填骨髓，增气力。
《本草纲目》还有“李守愚每晨水吞黑豆二七枚，谓之五脏谷，到老不衰”的记载。

TheCompendiumofMateriaMedicaalsorecordsthat“LiShouyuswallowsfourteenblackbeanseverymorning,whichiscalledtheFiveOrganCerealandneversenileinoldage.”
人文历史
相传，汉高祖刘邦称帝后，吕后专权，为避祸乱已怀身孕的薄太后隐居于娘娘滩(河曲县城东北7公里处黄河中的小岛)，生下了后来的汉文帝刘恒。
在岛上隐居的艰难日子里，薄太后母德慈仁，不畏艰辛，效法炎帝尝百草兴农耕，发现原为当地居民用作驴马料的野黑豆，人食之不仅可当饭、口感好，而且久食之令人养颜美容、生发黑发、身材健美、神清气爽，并且黑豆还有活血化瘀、除痹去肿、明目舒心、去烦安眠、解百药之毒的特殊功能，有治心痛筋挛、膝痛胀满、产后头风、烦躁恍惚、脱发白发等药用功能。
因其细长圆小、形如人腰，薄太后赐名细腰黑豆，并教民种植，作为主食之一，还传授养生，为民医疾。为感念薄太后恩德，细腰黑豆这一珍贵品种在河曲代代相传，至今仍保持着原始野生品种和天然有机旱作耕作方式。
薄太后赐名“细腰黑豆”、造福当地百姓的美丽传说一直传颂至今：九曲黄河十八弯，传奇莫过娘娘滩；拜得薄后圣母殿，福佑百姓美名传。

Duringthedifficultdaysofseclusionontheisland,EmpressDowagerBowasnotafraidofhardshipsandimitatedEmperorYantotasteherbsandpromoteagriculture.Shediscoveredthatwildblackbeans,originallyusedasdonkeyandhorsefoodbylocalresidents,notonlyservedasfoodandhadagoodtaste,butalsocanbeconsumedforalongtimetonourishandbeautifytheskin,produceblackhair,maintainahealthybody,andrefreshthemind.Blackbeansalsohadspecialfunctionssuchaspromotingbloodcirculationandremovingstasis,removingdampnessandswelling,brighteningtheeyes,relievingrestlessnessandinsomnia,anddetoxifyingthepoison.Theyhadmedicinalfunctionssuchastreatingheartpainandmusclecontractures,kneepain,postpartumheadache,restlessnessanddizziness,andhairloss.
Duetoitsslender,round,andsmallshaperesemblingahumanwaist,EmpressDowagerBobestowedthename“slenderwaistblackbean”andtaughtthepeopletoplantitasoneoftheirstaplefood.Shealsotaughthealthpreservationandprovidedmedicaltreatmentforthepeople.TocommemoratethekindnessofEmpressDowagerBo,thepreciousvarietyofslenderwaistblackbeanshasbeenpasseddownfromgenerationtogenerationinHequ,andstillmaintainsitsoriginalwildvarietyandnaturalorganicdryfarmingmethodtothisday.

产地环境
河曲县位于晋、陕、蒙三省区交界，与陕西府谷县、内蒙古准格尔旗隔黄河相望，素有“鸡鸣三省”之称：耕地面积54.14万亩，年平均降水382毫水，无霜期145天左右；历史上十年九早，生态脆弱，经济发展缓慢；民谣“河曲保德州，十年九不收；男人走口外，女人挖野菜”便是人们昔日穷苦生活的真实写照。
河曲地处草原文化与中原文化的交汇地带，是一座集黄河自然奇景与人文奇景于一体的千年文化名城。
河曲历来素有“蔬菜基地”、“小杂粮基地”美称，沿河平川区盛产瓜菜，高山半山区农业以脱毒马铃薯、小杂粮为主，小杂粮主要有黑豆、谷子等为主。

Hequhasalwaysbeenknownasa“vegetablebase”and“smallcoarsecerealbase”.Theflatareasalongtheriverarerichinmelonsandvegetables,whileagricultureinthemountainousandsemimountainousareasismainlyfocusedondetoxifiedpotatoesandsmallcoarsecereals.Smallcoarsecerealsmainlyincludeblackbeans,millet,etc.
